CLO Magazine recently had an on-line post that stated that 60% of employees were dissatisfied with the coaching that they had received from their manager. The article goes on to discuss how coaching can either have a positive or a negative influence on organizations.
Duh.
What is at issue here is who does the coaching and who does the managing. I’ll bet if you ran the same survey and asked the question “Are you satisfied with the guidance that you receive from your manager?” you would get similar results.
A coach and a manager are rarely the same person. If you look at professional coaching, these are the people that make it their profession to work with individuals to help them achieve their goals. There are all sorts of coaches…life, business, relationship… you name it and it exists. In general, however, manager isn’t on the list.
Let’s let managers manage and coaches coach. The world will be a better place and we’ll get better survey results.
